Who Doesn't Follow Me Back on Instagram? 3 Ways to Find Out and Unfollow Safely
To see who doesn't follow you back on Instagram, compare your Following list with your Followers list. Instagram doesn't show this as one list in the app, so you either check names one by one, use a browser extension that reads both lists for you, or upload Instagram's data export to a free checker that does the comparison.
This guide covers all three methods, with a table to help you pick one. It also covers how to decide who is worth unfollowing, and how to unfollow people who don't follow you back without triggering an action block. Menu names below are as of October 2026 and Instagram changes them often.
Key takeaways
- Instagram has no single list of people who don't follow you back, so you compare Following with Followers.
- Three ways work: check names by hand, use a browser extension, or upload Instagram's data export to a free checker.
- Checking by hand only scales to small accounts; at hundreds of follows it takes an evening.
- Unfollow in small batches at a steady pace to avoid an action block.
Method 1: check by hand in the Instagram app
The built-in way works, but it only scales to small accounts. Instagram has no screen that says "these people don't follow you back", so you test names one at a time.
Search a name in your Followers
- Open your profile and tap Following.
- Pick an account you want to check and note the username.
- Go back, tap Followers, and type that username in the search box at the top.
- If the account shows up, it follows you back. If nothing shows up, it doesn't.
That is fine for checking a handful of people. At 300 accounts it takes an evening, and at 1,500 you will give up. It is also easy to make mistakes, because search can match similar usernames.
Use the sorting and categories in your Following list
Your own Following list can be sorted by Default, Date followed: Latest, or Date followed: Earliest. It also has categories such as Least interacted with and Most shown in feed. None of these tell you who follows you back, but they help you decide who to review first. Sorting by earliest follow date puts your oldest follows on top, and Least interacted with surfaces accounts you rarely engage with.
Method 2: see who doesn't follow you back in one click with igbento
If you are on a laptop or desktop, a browser extension is the fastest way to see your non-followers and act on the list. igbento works in Chrome, Edge and Brave, and uses the Instagram session you are already logged in to. It never asks for your Instagram password, and the lists it builds are stored in your browser.
Step by step
- Install the igbento extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open instagram.com in the same browser and log in the way you normally do.
- Open the unfollow tool at igbento.com/instagram-unfollowers.
- Click Find non-followers. igbento reads your following and followers lists and compares them.
- Review the result. Each person shows with their follower count and a verified badge when they have one, so celebrities and brands are easy to spot.
- Click Keep on anyone you want to protect. Kept accounts are saved by user ID and are skipped from now on.
- Select the accounts you want gone and start the unfollow queue. igbento unfollows them with natural delays between each one.
On large accounts, Instagram sometimes refuses to hand over the full followers list. When that happens, igbento checks each account you follow one by one instead. It takes longer, but the result is the same.
What the free plan includes
The free plan shows everyone who doesn't follow you back, lets you unfollow up to 25 accounts per rolling 24 hours, and allows 100 unfollows a month. Paid plans raise the daily cap and remove the monthly limit. See pricing for the current details.
Method 3: the free, no-login way on your phone
If you are on a phone, don't want to install anything, or don't want to give any tool access to your account, use Instagram's own data export. You ask Instagram for your followers and following lists as a file, then open that file in a checker. The comparison happens locally, so nobody needs your password.
Request your data from Instagram
- In the app, go to your profile, tap the menu, then Settings and activity, then Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
- Choose Download or transfer information and pick your account.
- Choose Some of your information, and under Connections tick Followers and following.
- Choose Download to device.
- Set the date range to All time and the format to JSON, then tap Create files.
A small export like this usually arrives in minutes to a few hours. Large accounts can take longer. Instagram emails you when it is ready, and the download link expires after a few days, so grab it soon.
Open the file in the checker
Download the ZIP, then open the free unfollowers checker. Upload the ZIP, or the followers and following files inside it. The first tab lists who doesn't follow you back, plus fans you don't follow back and the number of mutuals. You can copy the usernames or download a CSV. The files are read in your browser and are not uploaded.
The checker only finds people. To actually unfollow them from a phone, you do it by hand in the Instagram app, using the list as your to-do list.
Which method should you use?
Here is how the three ways of finding who doesn't follow you back compare.
| Manual in the app | igbento extension | Data export + free checker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time | Minutes per 10 or so accounts, impractical past a few hundred | About a minute to build the list, longer for very large accounts | Wait for the export (minutes to hours), then seconds to compare |
| Accuracy | Good if you are careful, but easy to slip | Live and current, read from your account | As current as the moment you requested the export, and it depends on a full export |
| Phone or desktop | Phone or desktop | Desktop Chrome, Edge or Brave | Any phone or computer |
| Can unfollow from the tool | Yes, one at a time | Yes, bulk queue with a Keep list | No, you unfollow in the app |
| Cost | Free | Free plan with limits, paid plans for higher daily caps | Free |
A simple rule: use the checker if you only want the list or you are on a phone, and use the extension if you want to clean up hundreds of accounts. You can also combine them. Many people run the checker first to see how big the problem is, then use the extension for the cleanup.
Deciding who to unfollow and who to keep
Not everyone who doesn't follow you back is worth unfollowing. A list of 600 non-followers is mostly accounts that were never going to follow you, and that is fine. Go through it in groups.
Accounts you should usually keep
- Brands, celebrities and news accounts. They don't follow back because they follow almost nobody. If you enjoy their posts, leave them. A verified badge in the list makes these easy to find.
- Friends, family and colleagues. Some people use a second account, restrict who they follow, or simply never noticed your follow. A quick message is better than an unfollow.
- Accounts you actively learn from or buy from. Creators, shops and professionals you rely on.
Accounts that are good candidates to unfollow
- Inactive accounts that haven't posted in a long time.
- Follow-for-follow accounts that followed you once and left after you followed back.
- Spam, bots and accounts you no longer care about. A very low follower count next to a very high following count is a common sign.
How to unfollow people who don't follow you back without an action block
Unfollowing is a normal action, but doing a lot of it quickly looks like automation to Instagram. If you mass unfollow on Instagram too fast, you can get an action block, which stops you from following or unfollowing for a while. These blocks usually last between 12 and 48 hours.
Instagram doesn't publish official limits. The numbers people commonly cite are 100 to 200 unfollows a day, 10 to 20 an hour, and 30 to 60 seconds between actions. Accounts under about six months old are usually advised to stay at 30 to 50 a day. Treat these as rough guides, not guarantees. Our guide to the Instagram unfollow limit goes into more detail.
How igbento paces unfollows
- It adds natural, varied delays between unfollows instead of firing them back to back.
- Daily caps are counted over a rolling 24 hours, not a calendar day.
- The free plan allows 25 unfollows per rolling 24 hours, up to 100 a month.
- Paid plans allow 100 a day in Safe mode or 150 a day in Standard mode.
- If Instagram pushes back, the queue pauses automatically instead of pushing on.
If you unfollow by hand
Spread the cleanup over several days. Do 30 to 50 a day if your account is new, or up to 100 if it is older and active. Take breaks, and don't combine a big unfollow session with mass following, mass liking or commenting in the same hour.
Common mistakes when checking non-followers
Choosing a short date range in the export
If you set the export date range to something like the last year, accounts you followed earlier than that can be missing from the file. The checker then thinks they never followed you and lists them as not following back. Always choose All time.
Reading only followers_1.json
Large accounts get their followers split across several files: followers_1.json, followers_2.json, and so on. If you read only the first one, many real followers are missing and you will see far too many people who "don't follow back". Use every followers file. Uploading the whole ZIP to the checker handles this for you.
Confusing the two directions
People who don't follow you back are accounts you follow that don't follow you. Fans are the reverse: accounts that follow you that you don't follow. The checker shows both, and it is easy to unfollow the wrong group if you mix them up.
Treating an old export as current
An export is a snapshot from the day you requested it. People who followed you back since then won't appear in it. If you are about to unfollow someone, check that the list is recent. A live check with the extension avoids this problem.
Mixing up recently unfollowed with unfollowed you
The export contains a file named recently_unfollowed_profiles.json. It lists accounts you unfollowed, not people who unfollowed you. For that, you need to compare two exports, which our unfollow tracker guide explains.
Frequently asked questions
How do I see who doesn't follow me back on Instagram?
Compare your Following and Followers lists. In the app you can search each name in your Followers, which is slow. A faster way is a Chrome extension like igbento that reads both lists, or a free checker where you upload Instagram's followers and following data export. Both give you a ready-made list of non-followers.
Does Instagram have a built-in list of people who don't follow me back?
Not reliably. Instagram has been rolling out a category with a similar name, but you may not see it yet, and it may show followers you don't follow back, which is the opposite list. Your Following list can be sorted by date followed and filtered by least interacted with, but that does not show who follows you.
Can I find non-followers on my phone without logging in anywhere?
Yes. Request your Followers and following data from Instagram as a JSON file with the date range set to All time, then upload the ZIP to igbento's free checker. It runs in your browser, needs no login or install, and gives you a list and a CSV. You then unfollow people in the Instagram app yourself.
Is it safe to mass unfollow on Instagram?
It is safe if you go slowly. Instagram has no official number, but people commonly stay under 100 to 200 unfollows a day, with gaps between actions, and fewer on new accounts. Unfollowing hundreds at once can cause an action block that lasts 12 to 48 hours. Spread the cleanup over several days.
Why does the list show people who actually follow me?
Usually the export was incomplete. The most common causes are a short date range instead of All time, or reading only followers_1.json and skipping followers_2.json and the other files. Request a new export with All time and JSON, and use every followers file. Uploading the whole ZIP handles this automatically.
Will people know if I unfollow them?
Instagram doesn't send them a notification when you unfollow. They can notice by checking their followers or by comparing lists over time, so unfollowing someone close to you can still be noticed. For friends and family, a message is often better than a silent unfollow.
How many people can I unfollow per day on Instagram?
Instagram doesn't publish an official limit. A common guideline is 100 to 200 a day, 10 to 20 an hour, and 30 to 60 seconds between actions, with 30 to 50 a day for accounts under six months old. igbento's free plan allows 25 per rolling 24 hours, and paid plans allow 100 or 150 a day.
Do I need to give igbento my Instagram password?
No. The extension uses the Instagram session you are already logged in to in your browser, and never asks for or stores your password. Your lists are kept in your browser. The free checker does not need a login at all, because it only reads the data file you upload.
